Featuring artworks inspired by plant species of Southwest of Western Australia, which I encountered during an artist’s residency in Albany. This region is a global biodiversity hot spot, renowned for its hyper diverse flora, shaped over hundreds of millions of years. I spent a lot of time in the landscape learning about these plants. The process of identifying plants relies on using the senses, particularly sight, touch, and smell to find traits in common with familiar plants. Using sense memory simultaneously focuses the attention to the “here and now” while accessing memories of the past. In parallel, the interaction between the senses and materials while making art, creates a state that is both focused in the present while exploring past experiences. Each artwork consists of a scroll, hanging on a corresponding papier mâché hook. The hook is a literal connection of the artworks to the “here and now” of the exhibition space and acknowledges the nature inspired decorative elements in the architecture of Braemar house.
